Tennessee DPS Written Test Requirements

The written driver license test has 30 multiple choice and true / false questions.

You must answer 24 of the 30 questions correctly to pass the exam.

The questions are based on the information you can find in the driver’s manual.

After you Pass the Written Exam

If you are at least 18 years of age, you will be eligible for your full driver’s license after passing the written and road tests required by the TN DPS.

If you are under 18 years of age, you will have to meet the student’s permit requirements after passing the written exam.

What is the minimum age to get a Tennessee leaner’s permit?

You must be at least 15 years of age to obtain a learners permit.

The permit will allow you to practice driving with a licensed adult.

To apply, you’ll need to:

  • Make an appointment and visit your local driver services center.
  • Complete an application.
  • Provide proof of your identity and residency.
  • Be accompanied by a parent of legal guardian, if applicable.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Pass the Tennessee DMV permit test.
  • Pay the application and testing fees.

At this point, you’ll be able to being practicing your driving skills so that you’ll be ready to pass the driving test in order to get your regular driver’s license.

How long do you have to have a learner’s permit for if you are under 18?

You must have a learner’s permit at least 180 days before you are eligible for an intermediate driver’s license.

What are the supervised driving requirements if you are under 18 in TN?

With a learner’s permit, you must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a licensed adult.

How many questions are there on the written driver’s license test in TN?

There are 30 questions in total on the Tennessee DPS written test.

How many questions can you miss on the permit test in Tennessee?

You must answer 24 questions correctly to pass the test (80%).

How old must you be to apply for a driver’s license in Tennessee?
