Georgia DDS Written Test Requirements
All first-time applicants will need to pass the GA general knowledge test to get their instructional permit/driver’s license.
The written test for your Georgia driver’s license consists of two parts: the road rules test and the road signs test.
Each written exam contains 20 questions (a total of 40 questions) and you will need to get at least 15 correct ones in each exam to pass (30 questions).
Each test is based on the information you can find in the Georgia driver’s manual and our previous free practice tests.
The road rules tests will contain multiple-choice questions about driver responsibilities, traffic laws and safe driving practices.
The traffic signal test will test you on the meaning and identification of different types of traffic signs, markers and traffic signs.
If you fail the knowledge test the first time, you will have to wait at least one day to take it again.
If you fail the written test more than once, you will have to wait at least 7 days before taking it again.
After Passing the GA Written Test
If you are under 18 years of age, you may receive a driving license after passing the written test.
With a learner’s permit, you can practice driving with a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
You will have to complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving practice and keep your permit at least one year and one day before you can apply for a provisional license and take the road test.
If you are over 18 years of age, you will be able to schedule and take your driving test after passing the written test.

What is the minimum age to obtain a learner permit in Georgia?
In Georgia, you must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s permit.
To apply, you’ll need to visit your local DDS office:

- Provide proof of identity, residential address, US citizenship.
- Provide proof of school enrollment, if you are under 18.

How long do you have to have a learner’s permit for if you are under 18?
If you are under 18 years of age, you will be required to have your permit at least one year and one day before you will be eligible to take the road test and receive your driver’s license.
What are the supervised driving requirements if you are under 18 in GA?
With your learner’s permit, you will have to complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving practice with at least 6 hours completed at night.
You can only practice driving when you are accompanied by a Class C licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and seated next to you.

With an intermediate license you cannot drive between 12 am and 5 am.
During the first 6 months only members of the immediate family can ride in the vehicle with you.
During the second 6 months, only one passenger under 21 who is not a family member can travel in the vehicle with you.
