Prepare for the West Virginia DMV Permit Test

By taking practice tests, exam simulators, and studying the driver’s manual topics, you’ll be better prepared to pass your written knowledge exam on the first try

While the West Virginia written knowledge test is one of the first steps towards getting your first driver’s license, you may also need to pass the written exam:

  • When you’ve just moved to West Virginia.
  • When you renew your driver’s license.
  • If you’ve received too many traffic violations.
  • If you need to reinstate a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

When you’re prepared to pass the exam, it can help to make an appointment to guarantee you’ll be able to take it. Make sure you arrive at the DMV office with plenty of time as many offices do not allow you to take exams after a certain time.

Many West Virginia DMV offices will have you take the written exam on a computer. You’ll receive your results right after you finish.

If you take the test on paper, you’ll need to bring it back to the DMV exam proctor, who will grade your test and let you know your score.

Here’s what you need to know about the West Virginia DMV written driver’s license exam:

  • Number of Questions on the test: 25 questions
  • Passing Score: 76% or 19 correct answers
  • Number of Questions you can miss:  6 questions
  • If you fail the written test: You’ll need to wait at least 1 week to try again.
