About the Learner’s Permit Test
The permit test, written test, or knowledge test is the first big step towards getting your driver’s license in every state.
You can see how the written tests compare and which states have the easiest permit tests here.
The test contains questions about traffic laws, driving safety, and road signs – all of which can be practiced here and studied in the official driver’s handbook for your state.
Depending on where you live, the permit test will contain anywhere from 20 to 50 questions (true/false and multiple choice).
In most states, you’ll need a passing score of at least 80%.
Once you pass the written exam, you’ll be issued your official learner’s permit and you’ll be able to start practicing your driving with a supervising driver seated beside you.
If you fail, don’t worry. It’s actually more common that you think!
In most states, you’ll simply need to wait a few days before you can try again. Take the time to really study and prepare.
Failing 3 times may require you to make a new application and start the process again.

Is the Permit Test Hard?
Considering most new drivers have probably never given the state’s traffic laws and driving safety topics much thought, the permit test can be very hard if you don’t take the time to prepare.
In fact, statistics show that anywhere from 30-60% of permit test takers fail on their first try!
That said, studying and practice go a long way.
Every single answer on your permit test can be found in your driver’s handbook.
