What is a CDL Combination Vehicle?

A CDL combination endorsement is one of the most common endorsement CDL drivers will hold.

A combination vehicle is a truck/tractor unit with one or more trailers, more commonly referred to as a semi-truck or semi.

The trailers and the truck are connected by means of a fifth-wheel or converter dolly.

Combination trailers can take a variety of forms including flat trailers, enclosed trailers, tanks, and more.

Operating a combination vehicle requires different skills and knowledge than a straight truck, which is why you’ll need to pass both a combination knowledge test and a skills test in a combination vehicle in order to receive the endorsement.
