What can you drive with a Class A CDL?

A Class A CDL allows you to drive:

  • A single vehicle or a combination of vehicles (trailers) with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more. 
  • A vehicle towing another vehicle that weighs 10,001 pounds or more.

Some examples of these include:

  • Tractor-trailer combinations. 
  • Livestock carriers.
  • Automobile transports.
  • Tanker trailers.

About the Class A CDL Written Test

All CDL applicants will need to pass the CDL general knowledge exam, which is based on Sections 1 through Section 3 in the CDL manual. 

This test includes on questions about:

  • General trucking information.
  • How to drive safely.
  • How to transport cargo safely.

The CDL general knowledge exam includes a total of 50 questions.

You’ll have a time limit of 60 minutes to take and pass the test. You must answer 40 answers correctly (80%) to pass.

The combinations vehicles test include questions on:

  • How to drive a combination vehicle safely.
  • Using air brakes with combination vehicles.
  • Using anti-lock brakes with combination vehicles. 
  • Pre-trip inspections for combination vehicles. 
  • Coupling and uncoupling trailers. 

How to Get a Class A CDL

The first step towards your Class A CDL is taking and passing the written tests. This will get you your Commercial Learner’s Permit which will allow you to prepare for your skills test.

As part of the application, you’ll also need to:

  • Submit an application form.
  • Provide acceptable proof of your identity, age, Social Security Number, and residency. 
  • Pass a vision exam.
  • Provide your thumb print. 
  • Submit any required background checks and medical certifications. 
  • Pay the appropriate testing, class, and endorsement fees.

Once you’ve satisfied the requirements of the commercial learner’s permit, your next step will be taking and passing your skills test. 

To receive a Class A CDL, you’ll need to take and pass the driving skills test in the type of vehicle that corresponds with your license class and endorsements.
